Basic Knitted Flower

01/05/2011 · In: Tutorial

Somtimes the simplest trims are the best. When I made a Camomile Lawn Tea Cosy for my friend and colleague Lorraine, I decided to go for a simpler flower than the camomile flowers on the original. They looked great (apologies for the poor quality photos) and were a nice way to vary the pattern a little and keep my interest.

These little five-petal flowers are easy to make and I won’t claim the pattern as my own as they are one of those patterns that have been around forever.

Here’s how to make them.

Use any yarn with the recommended needle size.

Cast on 2 stitches

Row 1 – Knit into front and back of first stitch, knit 1.

Row 2 and every following wrong side row – Knit to end.

Row 3 – knit into front and back of first stitch, knit 2.

Continue in garter stitch, knitting front and back of the first stitch of every right side row until you have six stitches. Knit one more wrong side row.

Next Row – cast off 4 stitches, knit 2

Next Row – knit to end

One petal is now complete, repeat four more times so you have tive petals in total.

Next cast of two remaining stitches leaving a long yarn tail for sewing up.

Using the yarn tail, run a gathering thread along the straight edge. Join the first and last petals so they form a circle. You can either pull the thread tightly so the hole in the centre closes and the flower has a gathered look, or you can pull it a bit less so that the flower lies flat and ther eis a hole in the middle of the flower.

Secure the thread and sew in the ends on the under-side of the flower.

I made little bobbles for the centre of my flowers, but you could use buttons, beads or french knots.
