Retro Monday – 80’s Crochet

21/10/2013 · In: Retro Monday, Vintage patterns

Just the one picture for today’s Retro Monday. This is from a pattern booklet which contains both knitting and crochet patterns.

I’m currently obsessed with crochet, but not with crochet garments. I’ve always thought of crocheted fabric as either unpleasantly bulky or a bit too granny square/hippy-ish. But this Patons pattern might have changed my mind.

When I first saw this early 1980s jumper I thought it was knitted in a lacy garter stitch – but closer inspection (and actually reading the description) revealed it to be crochet. Made up in 4ply cotton, the fabric doesn’t seem to have that bulky, macrame quality that a lot of crochet has. It’s still bulky for 4ply (compared to knitting) but the light yarn and batwing style gives it drape – which crochet often lacks.

I’m almost certain that I’ll never make this jumper, but it has piqued my interest in crochet garments. I don’t know if I’ll get to the point where I see a pattern that makes me want to start hooking on the spot, but it will be fun raiding op shops for old patterns while I keep searching.

(Please note that I do not own the copyright to any patterns featured in Retro Monday. Unfortunately this means I make or send out copies).
