Retro Monday – Patons Book 105

27/06/2016 · In: Retro Monday, Vintage patterns

>Today I’m looking at Patons Book 105 –  one of the “Patons Classics” series of patterns.

Patons have been issuing leaflets and books as part of their Classics series for decades. They usually contain raglan sleeved jumpers in 5ply and 8ply yarns with vee, crew and polo necks. Later editions have cardigans too – again in both 5 and 8ply weights and various necklines.

The recently revised editions in the series have vests, cardigans and jumpers and have added 12ply knits to the range. In the men’s book there are 38 patterns and the women’s book has 44.

I already own fairly recent versions of both the men’s and women’s books so I bought this one for giggles.

I think this version is from the late 1970’s. The models’ sideburns along with the orange, brown and yellow colour combos are very 70’s even though the jumpers themselves are hard to date because they are simple classics. Then there is the matter of the skivvy and vee-neck ensembles which scream 70’s.

As much fun as I had with the cover photos, it was nothing compared to the black and white photos inside. The expressions on the models’ faces are priceless. I think I got my money’s worth with Patons Book 105 based on those pictures alone.

Those are winners! I am thinking of donating my vintage patterns to the Hand Knitters Guild library. At least I know they won’t be cut up for crafting! 🙂

I know what you mean – I hate to see beautiful patterns “upcycled” into crap. If you’d like to donate to my collection you know where to find me…
