Moving House – Again

01/10/2012 · In: Home and Away

My knitting time over the next few weeks will be a bit limited – I’m moving house – again. This was just decided today and my head is full of all the things I need to do now.

Only a few blocks away this time but it’s still a whole house that needs to be boxed up and transplanted. Long story, wont bore you with too many details, but the whole kitchen ceiling needs to be replaced after a big storm and it’s not exactly something I want to be living through.

Because we moved only six months ago we haven’t completely burrowed in like witchety grubs yet. So it should be a far less distressing move than last time. I’ll keep telling myself that but you should be able to hear me screaming and swearing from wherever it is you live in the world.

On the plus side, I’ve been working through my stash, and I even repacked everything and relabeled all the boxes before I knew we were moving. I still have far too much yarn but at least I know what I have.

One of the things I knit from my stash was Ansouis from Rowan Magazine 45.

It’s made using Rowan Summer Tweed which is a silk and cotton blend, 10ply weight yarn. It’s kind of knobbly – well, tweedy – and feels weird and papery to knit with. But once it’s knit up it feels velvety and soft and is beautiful to wear.

The only modifications were making it about 15cm longer than the pattern said, and so the button bands were longer too. Also I left off the pockets. I’m really very happy with it.

The buttons are from Clegs in Melbourne. They were kind of expensive at $2.20 each but they look great. They are plastic but they look like ceramic

I made the mistake of doing the seams in Summer Tweed too – even though I’d bought some Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino to do the seams. Summer Tweed is a bit “brittle” for a seam and I’ve already broken a seam over the armhole. I’ll do a temporary mend for now but AFTER I move house I’ll reseam the whole thing with Baby Cashmerino (which I chose because it’s strong and the colour matched well).

My next project is not from stash, which I’m regretting slightly now. If it was from stash I’d be reducing how much I have to move to the new house. Ok – I’d still move the same amount of stuff, but it would be in garment form instead of yarn form and that has to count for something.

Anyway, the new garment already has sleeves and a back, so I hope to get the front made up as over the next few days.

In the mean time, I’ll be scrounging boxes and having a bit of a wardrobe purge before the big move in a few weeks.
