Retro Monday – Lee Target Sideways Knit

11/04/2016 · In: Retro Monday, Vintage patterns

Another super-busy week for me this week with more interstate travel. Last week I was in Sydney and later this week I’ll be in Hobart. While in Hobart I hope to take some pictures of my favourite yarn shop – The Stash Cupboard – to share with you.

I have manged to make three hats and a cowl so far in my Destash for Charity endeavours and I’ll share some pictures next week. But today I have another Retro Monday pattern and it’s one of my all-time favourites.

This is a Lee Target pattern and I must say I don’t know much about the Lee Target brand. I did find out that Lee Target yarn was made by George Lee and Sons Ltd of Wakefield, England. They did a lot of scary synthetics in the 70’s (but who didn’t), and were bought by Patons but that’s the limit of my knowledge. If anyone knows more please let me know.

lee target knitwearThe top in today’s Retro Monday pattern is knitted side-to-side; casting on at one sleeve and knitting across to the other one. The front and back are separate and identical.

I love this top because the side-to-side construction produces a really nice slash neckline. Also, a sideways construction can often result in sleeves that are saggy under the arm or tend towards a batwing sleeve style – but these ones are very neat.

The black and white picture makes it a bit hard to tell how see-through the lace pattern is, but I think it’s pretty holey and would benefit from a vest underneath.

Apart from the garment, the styling of the pattern is just lovely. The model looks fresh and happy and I really want hair like hers.

Will I knit this one? Yes – definitely! I might put it in the official queue for next Spring – but now we are in mid-Autumn, the robust jumpers and woolen socks are at the top of my list.
