A Public Service Announcement

29/12/2011 · In: Home and Away

Currently, the original Little Yellow Cat, Cobey is taking antibiotics to clear up a runny eye and sneeze situation.  He has to take two pills a day for three weeks. When the vet gave me the phial of pills I thought “I’m not going to have any blood left in three weeks”.

Cobey is particularly difficult to get pills into.

Normally it’s just easier to crush a pill, mix it with honey and smear it on his front legs so he licks it off. I didn’t have any honey so I tried cream cheese. Before I could smear it onto his legs he licked the drug laced cream cheese right off my fingers.

Now I don’t even crush the pills. I just sneak one into a blob of cream cheese about the size of a baked bean and he gobbles it up. Because the cream cheese doesn’t need chewing he doesn’t find the pill.

He has ten more days of pill popping and he’s going to be very sad when the cream cheese supply runs out. I never thought I’d say this but he actually gets excited about his medication time.

So if you need to give a cat a smallish pill, try this technique. It could mean you get to keep your blood and skin intact.

great tip! luckily it easier to get a pill into my older cat than it is to cut her claws.
and my younger cat is so sweet and stupid you can pretty much do anything to her.
my older cat is actually getting monthly injections for her arthritis that i give her. I’ve taken to giving them to her while she’s eating. she’s still, not likely to go anywhere and by the time she’s finished eating she’s forgotten all about it.

I hope Cobey is up and around again soon. Thank you for the tip about the cream cheese. It is very much appreciated!
